The new treatment, which is called the “Topical Pain Relievers” from Voltaren, comes in a new formulation of a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).
“This treatment is very helpful in helping the hands and wrists heal quickly and painlessly and effectively,” said Dr. Paul C. Krennicoff, Director of Medical Devices for the FDA’s Office of Drug and Cosmetic Health and Consumer Affairs, in a press release.
The new treatment is the first for the painful and stiffness of the hands and wrists, known as hand-related hand sprains and strains, and arthritis. The new treatment is available by prescription only, with the prices starting at $50 for a 30-day supply.
“As we look forward to more exciting and innovative clinical studies, more and more patients are seeking our new treatment,” said Dr. Paul Krennicoff, Director of Medical Devices for the FDA’s Office of Drug and Cosmetic Health and Consumer Affairs.
The new treatment will be available by prescription only, starting on January 23, 2022. The price is $65 for a 30-day supply.
“This is a very exciting new treatment for painful and stiffness of the hands and wrists,” said Dr. Krennicoff. “We look forward to continuing our work on this innovative treatment for more patients.”
The FDA is advising consumers to immediately stop taking the Topical Pain Relievers, which contain Voltaren Gel, and for a one-month supply of the new treatment, starting on January 22, 2022. Consumers can also contact the FDA’s Office of Compliance, via FDA’s online pharmacy platform, or by calling 1-800-FDA-1088.
The Topical Pain Relievers are available only on prescription from a doctor.
The new treatment will be sold at most local pharmacies, including local pharmacies that offer Voltaren in a different form, such as a gel or tablet.
